Reflexology
What
is Reflexology?
Reflexology
is a system of healthcare that works by stimulating the many nerve
endings in the feet. These nerve endings or 'reflex points' are related
to various zones of the body.
The
reflex points are stimulated by a specific pressure technique applied
by the thumb or forefinger. Reflexology has emerged from the healing
traditions of various countries; similar forms of foot stimulation
are known to have existed in Egypt and India, amongst others, many
hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago.
What
will happen at the Reflexology session?
At
the first appointment a health history will be taken and you can
tell the Reflexologist a bit about your own situation; your general
well being and any health issues. This may take between ten and twenty
minutes.
The
Reflexology session itself lasts from forty to fifty minutes. For
this time you will be lying on a couch, making sure that you are
perfectly comfortable - you are encouraged to use this time to thoroughly
relax. There will be pillows to rest your head, legs and feet on
during the session.
The
feet are first dusted with powder to enable the working hands of
the practitioner to make a firm yet gentle contact and to prevent
the thumb or forefinger slipping over the reflex points.
The
stimulation of the reflex points is interchanged with various foot
massage techniques that serve to loosen and relax not only the feet
but also the legs and the rest of the body. This is useful in both
promoting relaxation and benefiting poor circulation.
How
does Reflexology feel?
Reflexology
should feel comfortable to receive. Indeed, most people find it very
relaxing. Occasionally the recipient may experience a slight scratching
or pricking sensation or sometimes, a dull ache. Others experience
sensations in other areas of their body.
The
sensitivity of people's feet varies enormously; the degree of sensitivity
has no bearing on the effectiveness of Reflexology on the individual.
You will be asked for feedback in order to apply the right pressure
and to be aware of any sensitive areas - these may or may not be
significant, each case is different.
For
the most part though, Reflexology feels very comfortable. Please
be sure to wear clothes that are comfortable to lie down in.
How
can Reflexology help?
Reflexology
can help in a wide range of health issues - with either
an emotional or a physical foundation. It can also help
to maintain good health.
How
will I feel after Reflexology?
People react in different ways to Reflexology. You may feel extremely
relaxed, or conversely, very energized. It is usual to feel a strong
sense of calm groundedness and balance. The effects may be immediate
or delayed.
It is advised that you drink plenty of still mineral water after
a session of Reflexology to help clear the body of released toxins.
We
suggest that you tell your doctor that you are coming for Reflexology.
These days most doctors show a very positive attitude towards safe,
non-drug centred forms of healthcare used where appropriate.
