What is Human Givens Therapy?

The human givens approach to therapy offers effective and practical help for people who are depressed, anxious, phobic, or suffering from trauma, addiction, anger, or relationship difficulties.


The humans givens are basic human needs and when they are not met in a person's life, a lot of misery can result. Happily, we are provided with innate resources to help us meet these needs and therapy can help us access our hidden or under-used abilities. Why is it effective?
Human givens counselling draws on the findings from psychology and neurobioloy about how people really functioning together with international research studies that have established the counselling techniques that are the most effective.

Human givens therapists focus on helping clients identify unmet emotional needs and empowering them to meet these needs by activating their own natural resources in new ways. To do this they use a variety of up-to-date, proven, brief solution-oriented techniques.

An effective therapist:

Helps immediately with anxiety problems including trauma, anger, and addictions, and will use a wide range of techniques
Understands depression and how to lift it
Is prepared to give advice if needed or asked for
Will not use jargon or 'psychobabble'
Will not dwell unduly on the past
Will be supportive when difficult feelings emerge, but will not encourage people to get emotional beyond
the normal need to 'let go' of any bottled up problems
May assist you to develop your social skills so that your needs for affection, friendship, pleasure, intimacy, & connection to the community can be better fulfilled
Will help you to draw on your own resources
Will be considerate of the effects of therapy on the people close to you
May teach you to relax deeply
May help you think about your problems in a new and more empowering way
Will use a wide range of techniques
May ask you to do things between sessions
Will take as few sessions as possible
Will increase your self-confidence and independence, and make sure you feel better after each consultation

Michael was born in London in 1948. His first career after studying at Oxford was as a designer in Educational Publishing.

Life then took him into the West Country where he married and had two daughters working as a Graphic Designer. After several life changing events in the early 1990's Michael began work in the field of disability and did several trainings in healing and therapy.

The turning point came in 1996 when Michael attended a seminar by Joe Griffin at Mindfields College. Human Givens Brief Therapy then became his life's passion. It is a living and growing new school of psychology with numerous practical applications in life: therapy, education, sociology and business too.
